Flies, weapon of war. The most characteristic legend of Girona is that of the flies of Sant Narcís. The miracle of the flies happened, they say, in September 1285, when the army of the king of France, Philip the Ardite, besieged Girona on the occasion of his trifles with King Peter of Aragon. Although the city capitulated without a fight, the French, on entering the city, behaved ignominiously: they robbed, insulted and oppressed the people of Girona; they stormed churches, laughing at objects of worship, and finally desecrated the incorrupt body of St. Narcissus, kept in the basilica of St. Felius, and broke his arm.
