The first reliable documentary data on the existence of the manaias in Girona is from the year 1751. On this date we know that four manaias guarded the "mystery" of the Holy Sepulcher in the Iglesia del Carmen throughout Holy Thursday and that they also opened the procession. From that moment on, the manaies took part, leading them, in the two processions that took place during Girona's Holy Week: that of Holy Thursday (organized by the Royal Brotherhood of the Purest Blood, founded in Girona in 1568) and that of Good Friday (organized by the Archconfraternity of Passion and Death, founded in 1684).
